Post adoption support

The Team

Rotherham's Therapeutic Team is managed by a Clinical Psychologist and consists of both Social Workers and therapists including Art Therapists.

Post adoption support group

This is a support group for adoptive parents and is there to support you alongside your own family and friends. The group will give you an opportunity to:

  • Meet other adoptive parents of children
  • Share experiences of life with your child
  • Share and discuss strategies and celebrate success

The group can also help you explore other issues such as:

  • Sensory integration
  • Education
  • Executive functioning
  • Trauma
  • Sleeping
  • Eating/food issues
  • The brain
  • Attachment
  • Pace (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy) parenting principles
  • Grandparents
  • Looking after yourself
  • Triggers from your own childhood

Contact with the birth family

In most circumstances, children who are adopted will continue to have some level of contact with their birth family even if this is through indirect means such as annual letters. We have a dedicated Contact Coordinator to support both adoptive and birth parents in this.

Through the adoption training, our adopters are advised and supported in how to maintain links with birth family members.

Early years education funding

All 2-year-olds who have been adopted from Council care are entitled to 570 hours a year of government-funded early education over at least 38 weeks of the year. This is equivalent to 15 hours free early education each week.

Adoption Support Fund (ASF)

The Adoption Support Fund (ASF) is a new fund established to help pay for essential therapy services for adoptive families as and when they need it. A Social Worker within the Post Adoption Support Team will complete an assessment and made an application to the fund on your behalf.
